Sure, it did just what I expected in fabricating parts for my truck, but it has also helped me fix and repair dozens of things around the house. As an example, my wife had an old coat rack that was made of wood and cast iron – it originally belonged to her great grandmother, but the iron part had cracked and broken. I took it to a guy to fix it, and he wanted $300. I thought it was crazy to spend that kind of money, so I bought about $5 worth arc welding rod specially made for cast iron, a can of flat black paint and fixed it myself. A few weeks later the handle on my workshop vise broke – I would have had to throw it away, but with a bit of welding, and its as good as new. From my camp trailer, to hand tools, broken stuff for the family and friends – I’ve used my welder a hundred times.

That’s why I recommend purchasing one so freely. I’ve easily saved enough money to pay for the cost of my welder many times over. So many things around the house that I would have had to just throw away are practically good as new. Home workshop, arts and crafts, automotive repairs – all are applications that I’ve used home welder to work on. It just opened a whole new world of potential projects I could complete. I admit I’m kind of a tool junkie, but a welder is just something that most homeowners wouldn’t think of.

Different types of welding equipment are available, some are powered by 220V wall power, some welders have their own generator to create their power. Different technologies include Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welders which feed a continuous wire into the welder, and use a flow of argon gas to keep the metal from burning or oxidizing too quickly. TIG welders (Tungsten Inert Gas) use a non consumable tungsten electrode and a bare uncoated hand held welding rod.

The type of welder I recommend for home use is a simple stick electrode – arc welding set up, which uses a rod covered in a flux to weld and can be plugged right into a standard wall outlet. During welding with this type of equipment, the vaporizing flux protects the metal. The arc is very high temperature and the metal virtually sprays off the end of the rod. The flux on the rod which does not vaporize, fuses into a molten glass which protects the metal from oxidation while it is cooling.

For the average home owner, a simple 120V unit, is probably best. No special modification to provide 220 V power is necessary, and the price is quite reasonable (I paid about $150 for mine).. The 120V unit is only good to weld up to about 3/16 inch steel. If you are doing heavy duty welding and heavy fabrication, you need a larger unit. However for 99% of the typical homeowner applications, I find the 120V unit is really sufficient. There are low cost MIG units that can run on 115V home power available for slightly more than the stick type arc welding units, but with MIG you also need a cylinder of compressed Argon to provide the inert gas, and that adds to the price a bit.

Welding supplies are available locally in most areas. These are the shops where you can purchase different types of welding rod (you can only use small diameter rod with a 120V unit). Different types of rods (or wire for MIG type units) are used for welding on different types of steel or iron. I also bought an upgraded welding mask at my local welding supply shop.

Anyway, I consider my little home arc welder one of the best purchases that I have ever made and I heartily recommend it to other homeowners. I’m not a welding equipment dealer, but I like my tools and this has been a good one to own, not to mention that the cost was very affordable. If you want to consider fabricating home metal craft projects, doing home and auto repairs, metal arts and other similar types of projects, I really think that it is a very worthwhile purchase. I know I wouldn’t be without one.

1. Safety glasses: These prevent dust, debris, wood shavings, shards from fiberglass, etc from getting into the eyes. Safety glasses are one of the most basic pieces of safety equipment that must be used when working with power tools.

2. Protection for the ears: Power tools can generate a lot of noise, which may sound louder in the cloistered environment of a workshop; in order to minimize damage to the ears, it is advisable to wear earplugs.

3. Knowing the right tools for the job: It is important to know the right tools for the job in order to avoid injury to oneself and damage to the materials. To this end, it is advisable to thoroughly read the instruction manuals provided with the equipment and get familiar with the recommended safety precautions.

4. Correct method of using tools: Tools should not be carried by their cords; tools that are not in use should be disconnected; and while handling a tool connected to a power source, fingers should be kept away from the on/off switch.

5. The right clothes: Long hair should be tied and loose clothing should be avoided. Ideally, clothing that covers the entire body should be worn and heavy gloves should be used in order to avoid sharp implements and splinters from hurting the hands. Masks prevent inhalation of harmful minute particles of the material that is being worked upon. Steel-toed work boots and hard hats can also be worn.

6. Tool inspection: Power tools should not be employed in wet environments and should never be dipped in water; they should be checked periodically for exposed wiring, damaged plugs, and loose plug pins. Nicked cords can be taped but if a cut appears to be deep, a cord should be replaced. Tools that are damaged or those that sound and feel different when used should be checked and repaired.

7. Cleanliness in the work area: This should be maintained because accumulated dust particles in the air can ignite with a spark. Of course, flammable liquids should be kept covered and away from the place where power tools are being used. An uncluttered work area also makes it easy to maneuver the power tool; often distractions caused by a tangled cord can result in an accident.

8. Care with particular tools: Miter saws and table saws should be used with a quick-release clamp and a wood push-through, respectively. Extra care should be taken while using nail guns and power belt sanders.

9. Keep tools in place: Power tools should be returned to their cabinets after use to prevent them from being used by an unauthorized and incapable person.

10. Lighting: It is important to use proper lighting while working with power tools, particularly when working in the basement and garage where lighting may not be satisfactory.

You will need the bottom (horizontal) measurement,

along with the two diagonal measurements. Also get

the thickness of the folded flag.

* bottom msmt: 24″

Decide on the type of wood you will be using, for this example, we will use oak.

A 1×4 piece of oak actually measures 3 1/2 in

width, which is fine. Buy an 8′ length. (for be-

ginners, in case there are mistakes)

Seeing that our flag is triangular in shape, we will

cut the angles on a 45 degree. You can do this with a

circular saw or a chop saw (mitre saw). Chop saws

give a much better cut.

The bottom measurement of our flag is 24″. So our

inside measurement of our 45 degree cuts must be

at least 24″. I recommend cutting the length of board at 24 1/4″

(little play room for glass and flag)

You should have approx. 6′ of board left. As you know,

wood has a grain pattern. These next steps will give your case

a more professional appearance.

Measure off the longest portion of the angled 6′ board

(that’s your long point of that particular angle, the

other is the short point of that particular angle.)

Your angled measurements are 16 3/4″.short point

to short point. However, you will be cutting it 3″

longer than that, (for mistakes). So let’s just cut

our side pieces 20″ long. short to short.

Measure off the 6′ board from long point 20″, using a

speed square or framing square, make a mark and cut

your piece. (set this piece aside)

The longer remaining piece should have a short point.

Your objective now is to turn that piece around 180

degrees, and cut the short point again in order to

make it a long point.

Once you do this, your two 45 degree angles at the top

of the display case will fit and the grain will match.

It will look continuous. (match up all the angled

pieces until you find that grain match)

When you place the bottom piece up to the angled side

pieces to form the triangle you will notice that the

side pieces are too long. Just pencil mark the bottom

where it hangs over the bottom piece. That now is going

to be cut at a 45 degree. Make sure you cut the 45

degree angle the correct way. Your end product should

be a short to short angled piece.

When you are marking the piece to be cut, also mark

the side of the board so you know for sure, which way

the wood should be cut.

Tack the frame together or use a strap to hold it in

position.

Measure the size of glass you will need.

We can measure the glass in two ways:

(1) -The exact size, minus 1/8th inch. (if you are going

to place a wooden corner cover over the glass and

attach it to the frame.) OR

(2) – The glass can be measured 1/4″ larger if it is going to be inserted into the frame.

Buy an 8′ piece of wooden corner board.

(for outside corners of walls) It is 3/4″ long on each

side of the 45 degree angle. Cut this to fit the

outside (facing) of the triangular frame you just made.

You can insert the glass from the back side after the

outside wooden corner’s are nailed on. Then you can cut and place 3

pieces of 1/4 “x 1/4″ molding on the inside to hold

the glass in place.

Inset glass involves using a table saw.

Set your table saw guide to 1/4″ from the inside of the saw blade to the guide itself.

Set the depth of the blade to 1/8th inch.

– If you know at the beginning that you will be insetting the glass, then cut the entire 8′ length of board at one time. It’s very difficult to cut small pieces like this and have it turn out correctly.

– If you have never used a table saw, ask someone with experience to perform this next step.—

Take the piece or pieces and with the table saw in operation, slowly guide the piece along the guide, making sure not too force the cut. Be gentle. It’s wise to use a forked stick to push the wood through the cutting process.

Once you have your cuts made, you are ready to nail it together.

Use small trim nails (1 1/4″) long and nail frame together. With glass inserted into the cut grooves you just made.(Set nails with punch and color putty when done)

This is much easier if you have a brad gun. also place the frame so the glass is face down so it doesn’t break if it falls out during this process.

Take the frame and place it on some 3/16th luon (lew-on or oak paneling)

and trace the outside of your frame. Cut this out for the backing of your display case. (Stain edges with the proper color. For oak, you can use Minwax-Colonial Maple or Early American.)

You can drill about 8 pilot holes through the 3/16″ luon into the wood frame. (On the Back Side) for screws. Insert your burial flag. Insert your screws.

–That’s a rap folks–your project is done.

TIPS:

Don’t be in a rush. You can do this.

When ever you take a measurement add 1/16″ to it. (20 1/16″ instead of 20″) That way, you cut ON the line and you will always have the true measurement that you need.
